Katy Graham joined Ericsson Education in 2000 and has since progressed her career to become a Competence Consultant for Ericsson LMI. Here's what Katy has to say about her time here:
'When I joined Ericsson I went into Education Ireland which is part of the Global Service Delivery Centre in Dun Laoghaire. Although I didn’t have a telecoms background, I have a H.Dip in Computer Science and I had some previous experience with technical instructing, so I got the job as a Technical Instructor. I joined with a large group and we had great fun socialising together in Dun Laoghaire and elsewhere at the Sports and Social events that are regularly organised.
Education was a great place to work as it was possible to change the technologies that you were teaching as your career progressed. I started off teaching about the Ericsson Telecom platform (AXE). After that I moved into the area of multimedia, delivering courses on WAP, MMS and IMS. As part of the Ericsson Education PodCast series I had the opportunity to do a PodCast on IMS IMS PodCast. This was great fun and I had to do a bit of acting for this!
Career Progression
During my time in Education, there were a number of opportunities to take on different roles. For example, I was webmaster of our internal website. As new recruits joined, it was expected of all staff to mentor them, so I had the chance to take on this role also. About 3 years after I joined, there was an opportunity in the department to participate in the development and project management of the Ericsson mobile learning project funded by the EU Leonardo da Vinci program. This research has aided the development of Ericsson’s first commercial mobile learning course. This role gave me the opportunity to attend and present at conferences, which was a great experience for me. We organized an in-house conference here in Dun Laoghaire in 2002 called “ mLearning: The Cutting Edge”, where I presented my first ever paper on how I used WML (WAP) to develop a mobile learning course. In May 2006 I went to the ECLO Conference, in Prague to present a paper on how IMS may be used for mobile tutoring.
At about this time Learning Solutions were becoming a growing business opportunity and a department was being set up within Education to formalize this business process. I joined this group as a Competence Consultant.
Current Job
As a Competence Consultant, I am responsible for identifying telecom operators’ performance & competence needs. I interview their staff to identify competence levels and recommend a customized training program to meet their needs.
Certification:
As a Senior Instructor I was certified at Level 3 of the Ericsson Personal Career Path. Also, in March 2007 I was certified as a Senior Competence Consultant according to the Service Delivery Career Model certification model.
Job Rotation
For 6 months in 2005, I moved to Stockholm to take on the role of IMS Solutions Integration &Verification Engineer in Ericsson R&D. In this role I had to learn about the Ericsson IP MultiMedia subsystem (now called IMS) and to write test specifications and perform testing in the lab. I learned loads while I was there as well as having a great time. I also took some Swedish language classes, but have long since forgotten most of it. The most important Swedish word to know is “Fika”, which is their word for a coffee break. If you use this word around 11am or 2pm, about 4 people come running at you with cake and coffee.
Travel
Nearly everyone in Ericsson travels. Extensively. It’s not unusual to have 2 passports and a rake of vaccinations that mean you could swim the Liffey and survive. We have customers all over the world and in your career in Ericsson you will most probably get the opportunity to visit a fair proportion of them. I’ve travelled to customers in countries in North and Central America, Australia, Asia, North and South Africa, and in nearly every country in Europe. Travel provides the most amazing opportunity, which we often take for granted in Ericsson because everyone travels so much.
Positive Points
There are lots of reasons why it’s great to work in Ericsson Education, but by a long shot the most important reason is the other people here. However we pick ‘em, the staff here are very good at their jobs, but also great fun, supportive and love a laugh.'
